Thomas and Davis are towns rich in history surrounded by some of the nation’s best outdoor recreation! From skiing at Canaan Valley and Timberline, to the hiking trails of the Dolly Sods Backcountry, great fishing, kayaking, and limitless outdoor recreation. (Not to mention 3 breweries and great places to eat!)

Blackwater Falls State Park

Blackwater Falls is a must see state park! Great hiking trails and overlooks for breathtaking photos, romantic hikes, and a refreshing blast of nature’s power. This is a great area for picnics, bathrooms, and snacks as well.

Bear Rocks

Dolly Sods Wilderness

Dolly Sods Wilderness Area one of nature’s finest! From Red Creek to Bear Rocks, there are great trails for day hikers (note: mountain bikes are not allowed inside of the wilderness boundary) as well as multi-day users. Beautiful vistas, blueberries and Fire Bushes highlight the area and provide one of the nation’s top spots for stargazing.

Mountain Biking

Fulton Outdoors provides great access from all three of their developments with access to the River Rail Trails (great for families), as well as great single track at Moon Rocks, Camp 70, and Voodoo Hoodoo. Fun times for novice to expert riders.

North Fork of the Blackwater River

River Rail Trails

Old railroad grades provide for one of the Potomac Highlands greatest outdoor recreation assets. The Blackwater River Rail Trail goes all the way to Elkins and provides for a great route for a walk over to town for a cup of coffee, or for a day ride with family and friends. This is a great access for fisherman and kayaking as well.

Douglas Falls, Tucker County

Douglas Falls

Douglas Falls is located just on the edge of Thomas along the River Trail and near the old Coke Furnaces. The trail to get to this view is pretty steep so make sure you have good boots or shoes. This is a beautiful view and a great place for a picnic as well!

Shopping on Front Street

Front Street is located in Thomas and features the world famous Purple Fiddle, The Christmas Store, several art galleries, antique stores, gift shops and coffee shops. This a great place spring, summer, winter and fall! Especially fun on July 4th!

The Town of Davis

Also known as Stumptown—this little town has a historic past in the timber industry, and pushes to redefine the future of mountain living and craft brewing. This is another great area to shop, dine, and partake in a local craft beer (featuring Stumptown Brewing).

Art Galleries

There are several great art galleries on Front Street in Thomas. Be sure to take your time, ask questions, and support the local artist and artisans. When your done, be sure to check out one of the near by coffee shops or cafés!

Mt. State Brewery

Breweries

The picture above is a flight of beer at Mountain State Brewing. They have great food and pizza as well. Make sure you have a designated driver, and then go visit Stumptown and Big Timber as well!

Kayaking

Kayaking / Paddle Board Launch

The North Fork of the Blackwater River is a staple for the Thomas community. It has a great fishing pier at the city park and boat launch for anglers and kayakers alike. This is a beautiful stretch of flat water for paddle boards and kayakers!

Music / Food @ the Purple Fiddle

The Purple Fiddle is a stopping point for many great musical acts! Be sure to check out their website to check out the schedule. This is one of Thomas’ famous cafes serving drinks and cocktails, ice cream, home made pie, and great meals as well!

Fishing / Hunting

The area features great hunting and fishing! There are many streams to choose from—the Blackwater and North Fork of the Blackwater are known for trout, but Catfish, Perch, Small Mouth Bass, and Bluegill are abundant. The Potomac Highlands have a great Whitetail and Wild Turkey population as well.
